In order to enter a USTA tournament you must have an official NTRP rating. you can get one from a Certified teaching pro (like myself) they go from 1 (very beginner) to 7 (touring pro) most people probably fall into the 3-4.5 range.

It seems as tho either the ratings are a bit leinient, or the 3.0 and 3.5 and 4.0 players I play with are way under-rated. And these ratings were given by club teaching pros. I realize they are to be used as a guide, and within a given club, you pay more attention to the opponents style/strengths/weaknesses than his rating... it's just that the descriptions just don't seem to meet the reality I've been exposed to.

Mike, you'll very rarely get 3 or 4 people on the same court that are all actual 4.0's or 4.5's. it is a rare occurrence and when it happens you should call your local newspaper immediately! same goes with USTA tournaments...you'll never ever ever get every 4.5 player into a 4.5 USTA. you'll get everything from 3.5's to 5.0's at a 4.5 tournament.
