View Full Version : nylon tubing how to
Hi, do you have to use a grommet grinder to get rid of the damaged grommet hole? can't you just remove the grommet and clip the old one off or is that too much hassle. Also how do you use it on double holes (do you put through two pieces, one or do you have to buy a thicker guage of nylon tubing?).
Hi Abiriax,
If you are removing a damaged grommit, you have to detach the original damaged grommit from the outer grommit strip on the outside of the frame with your grinder. If you clip it from the inside of the frame, you will miss the part of the grommit going through the frame.
I thought the nylon tubing was mainly used as a temporary fix if you didn't remove/replace the damaged grommit. The tubing should be thin enough to squeeze through the existing damaged grommit and then get a string through as well. I could be BS'ing here as I've never tried it. That wouldn't be the first time -
I've never seen double width nylon tubing.
Ciao,

Yes, nylon tubing is not intended for using it to replace a damaged grommet. You use it just to protect the string running through that grommet. As kwick said, when you want to replace a damaged grommet you have to get a "grommet repair kit" containing a grommet grinder and replacement grommets.
does that mean that if you use nylon tubing you dont have to grind out the damaged grommit or that you do?
I personally don't replace single grommets. I use nylon tubing in the damaged holes and when there are too many worn holes I replace the whole grommet strip.
okay, so you put the nylon tubing in by forcing it through the existing grommit?

I replaced couple grommets on my own racket.
This is the best way I can come up, and I did order the new set strips ready for the next string job.
After cut and removed all the strings, check out all the grommet to find out how many dammaged, cut the dammage by half, then cut the nylon tube double what you are cutting (little longer I don't think it's hurt anything)
When placing the string where the tube needed, just make sure the nylon tube stick out and cover the string contact point of the racket.
So far, the string hold up well.
Good luck.
:)
