hi,
i purchased a used klippermate on ebay for relatively cheap but it's missing a whole bunch of parts.
one part i'm wondering about is the starting pin. what does it actually do? can i substitute it with a thin 1/16th" steel rod or maybe even a scrap piece of string instead? by the looks of it in the manual, it seems that the starting pin is just used to fill the empty space on the floating clamp

I think the starting pin has a plastic head on it, and you use it in place of the string when starting the mains. If you got the manual, it should explain, if not, I'll see if I still have my manual lying around (I'm pretty sure I do, it's just not accessable now)

yes, i have the manual but it doesnt really say what it's for. it just tells you to stick it in the racquet. to me, it looks as if i can use a 1/16" metal rod to substitute it or even a scrap piece of string. it looks as if the plastic piece is just for a grip so you can pull it out of the racquet?
also, i'm missing the vise grip double string clamps. so far, i think it's possible for me to use two vise grips and manufacture the clamps in a metal shop.
i'll probably try machining 4 frame plates too since i'm also missing those.

Yeah, the starting pin has a plastic head on it, and that prevents it from slipping thru the grommet, as the pin is used to apply string tension in starting the right side mains. By the way, the part # is #748, and I'm sure you can get one on-line thru Klippermate.
As for using vise clamps, the one thing I'd worry about is getting the proper tension so as to not damage the strings.

hmmm...icic...thanks. now that i understand what the starting pin actually does, i think there are several easy solutions i can try.
i could try a thin welding rod tied to a nut and threaded through a piece of rubber, right? i think maybe even just a piece of string threaded through a rubber eraser then tied off will work fine.
as for the vise grips, clamping pressure is adjustable. it would be great if someone can provide me with some dimensions so i wont have to guess the proper size to make the double string clamps
