Hi,

Just a quick note.

I've been using a starting knot for crosses. The knot works but it's a sizable knot that really bears down on the grommet.

I've decided I'll use a half-hitch knot instead.

I've placed an order for a starting clamp ($32) from ATS Sports. I went ahead and ordered a straight awl also ($4). I've never really needed one but I figured just in case. Their price seems to be the cheapest against Tennis Warehouse and GSS.

Thanks,
eagle

Hi Eagle,

There was an interesting posting on GSS recently comparing 3 different starting clamps. (Babolat vs RAB as sold on GSS). They clearly differentiated these 3 from others on the market.

IMO, if you do invest in a starting clamp, it is worth spending the extra 13 bucks and going for the RAB from GSS. They are widely used and apart from one dissatified GSS client (he has been offered a replacement), I have seen nothing but praise for them in the Pro and amateur arenas. They grip well, they last and are quality tools. I have been delighted with mine in the 2 years I have had it.

I hope your ATS clamp works out well for you as well as your awl.

regards,

kwick

I hope so too kwick. :)

I'll let you know if it works well or not. It's actually a Gamma clamp and not ATS.

A quick google search on the Gamma clamp shows Silent Partner actually selling it for $2 less. :)

Thanks,

I have a collection of several different clamps, the best of which is the Babolat clamp...but it's REALLY expensive. I also have a Rab and it is great. I've never had it slip. I also have one from Silent Partner, Wilson and Gamma. Get the Rab.
