View Full Version : Favourite Side leading to racket distortion

I recently restrung a racket (Head, Nano Titanium) and subsequently the owner pointed out that there was distortion in the frame. Sure enough on placing the racket on a flat surface it was dished. Before stringing I had seen no damage to the frame but had noticed that, oddly, one side of the tip was badly worn and the bumper strip also worn and partly detached; I had not checked for distortion. Anyway I thought perhaps I had got the tensions wrong (although doubted this) so I took out the string but dishing persisted.

So I examined the racket more closely and noted the dishing was away from the worn side. I could not understand how the wear could be unilateral then I thought that maybe the owner had a "favourite" side and had a racket/ball bounce technique for collecting balls off the court. So I questioned the guy and in fact he did have a favourite side and was in the habit of dragging the ball back and bouncing it up. This then would explain the reason why the racket had become damaged and dished in the way it had.

I have never encountered a "favourite" side before although incredibly when I questioned my wife she disclosed that she has a favourite side for her racket.

Has anybody else encountered this problem of dishing arising from the use of a favourite side combined with "bouncing" up a ball from the court? It is certainly something to check for when restringing..
