also how do you clamp the first set of strings when you start? (in other words what is the first step when you created the loop on the head and pulled it throught where do you clamp it??)

I just bought my gamma X-2 off ebay. I'll let you know what it is like when it arrives :)

I had an ATS SS II which was similar to an X-2 and it was a good, solid starter machine. The biggest issue with these is the clamps. Be sure to keep them adjusted properly and clean the regularly with rubbing alcohol.
On starting the center mains(I assume you are doing a two piece job);
I raised the tension by 2 lbs. on the first 4 center mains. Then thread the two center mains and then one more on one side(it doesn't matter which one). Now put your first flying clamp on the two center mains about 3" inside of the frame on the end where you started threading the strings. Then pull tension on the 3rd string you threaded. Install the other clamp on that string and the one next to it next to the frame(not 3" inside it). Now pull tension on the 1st string and unclamp it and then move the clamp to the other end of the frame on the same two strings next to the frame. Now thread a 4th string next to the string you just tensioned, pull tension on it and then move the clamp to the other end and over by one string and clamp off next to the frame. You should now have the clamps side by side with 4 strings installed in the center. Adjust the weight down by 2 lbs. and then proceed threading and clamping off on one side then the other until you get to the outside mains. This is where your tieoffs come into play.

My gamma X-2 just arrived the other day. I couldn't be more happy with it. The only thing that could have been better were the clamps but they looked better than the klippermates anyway. This machine is a great buy for the price!! :)
