View Full Version : New Rackets - Question too

So I just bought two new Aero Storm Cortex's (2008) from TW. They matched them up and contacted me to verify the specs. Amazingly, the two rackets had the same balance point, static weight and swing weight as each other. The dimensions are as follows:

Balance Point: 129/16 - I believe this would convert to 8pts H/L
Static Weight: 10.702
Swing Weight: 283g

I thought that this was pretty amazing seeing that they are a discontinued racket. I do have a couple questions though.

First, does anyone know if my conversion for the balance point is correct? I just divided the numbers and came up with 8.06.

Second, does anyone know how much weight a string job adds and how much that would change the balance point? I've just usually assumed that it would be about .6oz and not sure about how many points it would change the racket.

Third, I'm looking to add a little lead to help stabilize the racket on off center hits and hard volleys. I'd like to get the racket up to about 11.6/11.7 with this addition of lead but keep around a 4/5 pt H/L once it's strung and leaded up.

Any help on these questions is greatly appreciated.

Regards,

DH

Hey Darkhors ;)

I am not good with imperial calculations and stuff, but it should be correct. 1 pt HL = 1/16" or 3 mm.

As for the weight of the strings, we need to know which string you're going to use. Not necessarily the model, but at least type (poly-multi-gut) and gauge. That way it will not be difficult to calculate how it changes the balance and work on it.

Last but not least, 10 grams of lead should move the balance by 1 cm = 10 mm = 0.4", which means about 4 points ;)

Hi again Stefano :)

I'm planning on using a poly/syn gut hybrid. The poly will be 17g and the syn gut will be 16g.

As for the lead, as I mentioned in the other post, I'm looking to polarize the 10grams as to not mess with the balance point after stringing.

Thanks,

DH

Hi Dark.

Look, if I have not miscalculated, a string job like that adds about 10 grams of weight (a tiny bit less than 0.36 oz).

Therefore, your frame would become 4 pt HL. If you put other 10 grams of lead at 19 cm from the butt cap (7.5"), the balance point will remain exactly the same as it was before stringing and the overall weight will be 11.4 oz. SW will be 298.

Then you can add 10 grams of lead at 3 and 9, the balance point will move to approximately 6 pt HL and the overall weight will be 11.7 oz. SW will go up to 313.

Give it a go and let me know how it goes ;)

Hi Stefano,

Thank you so much for the help. I'm expecting to receive my rackets on Monday along with my lead tape. I am going to weight the rackets after stringing and also check the balance point on them. I will see how close your calculations are for the string job and then will go from there with the lead. I look forward to learning the ways of an MRT and this is the first step for me. I know you just recently passed the test so your help is greatly appreciated.

I'll keep you updated on the turn out of the customization.
