replace broken Main String, while leaving in cross string

My main strings break way before my cross, sometimes the cross strings look brand new. Can I just restring the mains? I use the two piece method.

that is a very bad idea unless you are using a very expensive string.
Here's the problem: the racquet is not made to be strung crosses-first. So having the crosses in without the mains can crack the frame. Now, if you use a kevlar main, and you break the crosses, take em out and immediately re-string the crosses. That is usually ok.
