I started playing with a wooden racquet because of wrist and elbow problems. I found a wooden racquet that I perticularly like, but the strings are about to break and I will have to restring it.

Does anybody know what tension people commonly used to put in wooden raquets, and what is usually the maximum amount of tension they can hold?

The racquet is a JC higgins mohawk with about a 65 in head.

Wow - going to a wooden racquet (with a 65 in head no less!) is a bit drastic. There should be plenty of modern racquets that will be good on your arm. Try this web site:

They specialize in research on tennis racquets that are good for people with arm trouble.

I'd say 45-55 would be a good starting reference. Keep in mind, 45 pounds in a 65 inch head is not as loose as you might think. I still play with wood on occasion with some of my hitting partners. It doesn't take too long to get acclimated to the little sticks! I still think nothing feels better than a solid hit on an original Kramer. That being said, it does seem that there would be a modern racket out there to better suit your game and elbow. The Wilson Triads are wonderful and the entire Volkl line is a very comfortable one as well. Good luck.
