While I have no answer to your question I had to say hello to a fellow New Yorker. I lived in NY for 35 years and worked in my beloved Bronx for 5. Don't get me wrong Phoenix is much nicer in weather and taxes but there is only one Bronx NY.

Selling strings has more to do with the knowledge the stringer has of strings in general, rather than the wishes of the player. What I mean by this is quite simple when you think about it. Prince may be the most popular string for one dealer, but there may be hidden reasons for this that you will never be privvy to. For instance, if the Prince rep leans hard on the dealer to "push" his strings on to his customers he may offer discounts on other Prince materials such as bags, shoes, or racquets. This tends to distort the value and quality of the string but to the untrained eye, it appears as though this string is a great seller for that particular dealer because he/she is selling the shit out of it ;).

If you're just starting out you need to educate yourself on the materials of various strings and their proper application. My most popular string for many years has been from a company that many may know, but fewer buy directly from. However, this company also brands strings for many of the more popular manufacturers such as Prince, Head, or Wilson :D (you didn't think that those big 3 made all of their own strings did you?).

The string is popular in my shop because it's used in the proper application and I'm able to satisfy my players with a string that has a great balance of durability and playability (I hate the term playability but for explanation purposes I'll use it). The more you increase your knowledge base about strings, string construction, and string materials the less likely you are to become a slave to the big 3-4 companies that would like us all to believe that their strings are the greatest thing since sliced bread :cool:
