I've been noticing that almost every time I clamp and unclamp the string I notice it turns that section a little bit white? Is this some sort of damage to the string?
I use a Klipper stringing m/c (basic model) have tried with a variety of Gamma strings (TNT2, LiveWire, ESP....) and string 65-72 lbs. I've strung about 15 rackets so far and decided to sand the clamps but I don't think it made a difference.
Any help? Thanks.

Hi Rajeev
You will noticed a litttle mark on the string though, Make sure to adjust your clamp tension by losen the locking nut on the clamp, and make sure both clamps adjust the same tension.
(You should not using to much force to close the clamps)
Hope that help.

Thanks for passing the buck DF. You writing is fine and your English is much better than mine. :D :D :D

By the way Rajeev, if the string go a little white it's no big problem, many multiple fibers strings (like NXT, TF TGV etc, but also natural gut) will show these marks when you clamp them, but once the string is tensionned and you remove the clamps these light spots attenuate or even disappear completely. :)

Just be careful not to clamp with too much pressure, with the vice-clamps used on the Klippermate you need to take it very easy because these clamps can really clamp tightly, too much will damage the string. :o

It's saturday, you can all have a big one on me (beer Jaypro, just a beer, by the way mate where did Veri go to  )

Keep in the shade guys, it's too hot for stringing, :p
Bye,

i have a klippermate and my string tensioner puts marks on my strings...

it will flatten the string and also put some marks on it too

the vise grips also put marks on my strings. i tried adjusting it but if i dont have it clamp tight, the vise grips will pop open halfway through the string job...

so far it doesnt seem as though the marks have noticeably weakened the strings.

I started out on a Klipper many moons ago. What you need to do with the clamps is clean them often. Alcolol and a toothbrush works well (not scotch, but rubbing). I also used some fine emory paper to give the clamps a bit of texture to help holding the string with as little pressure as possible.

David is absolutely right with his suggestion about cleaning the clamps. If your clamps are of any value, they were designed with a purpose in mind. That means that they will hold a tensioned string if properly adjusted and most importantly, cleaned often. If you're cleaning your clamps and still having to crank the adjustment screw tighter and tighter to hold your string it sounds like two things are possible.

You may be stringing at very high tensions and if your clamps are not holding use a starting clamp as a backup behind the machines clamp. This should only be required on the first few mains strings.

If you're not stringing at high tensions, your clamps are clean and properly adjusted and you're still damaging the string it's down to one thing--you have s**t for clamps :) and there's not a thing you can do to prevent the problems you're experienceing.
