I just found this at gss.

http://www.grandslamstringers.com/videomedia.htm

Is this better/same/worse than the double half hitch?

It's much better. It's easier on the anchor string and when done correctly, the tag end lays right next to the frame. All in all, a very neat, compact, secure knot. I've been using it for quite a while with no slips reported. I believe Richard has been using it for many years and many thousands of frames.

I remember reading the thread on GSS a while ago and noting that this was similar to the knot JC described as a 'pro-knot' based on an interview Joe has on this site.

The thing about the Parnell knot which has never been clear to me from the videos or the text explanation is whether the last string goes through the small loop above the string plane (like the 'pro-knot') , or whether it goes around the anchor string again.

Cheers,

Eric

Thanks guys.

I'll give that knot a try and also document it at my site.

I tried looking for the interview here but can find it. I didn't find it in the Interview page or via search here at the forum. Could someone help me find it please?

Thanks,

Sure, there you go:

No charge. ;)

The interview is only available in German.

Cool!

Thanks Joe. I've read Jaycee's comments about half-hitch with a tail but I didn't realize it is different from the standard double half hitch.

I'll definitely use this knot on future string sessions.

I'll create an image of the knot and post it at my site.

The last pass on the Parnell knot goes around the anchor string again and is inserted through the loop from the underside. If you leave a big enough loop it's quite easy to just cinch up the knot using your hand by pulling on the opposite tail, then draqgging the anchor through to finish the knot.

Hi,

I've added info and pictures of this knot at my site.

http://www.keohi.com/tennis/misc/knots.htm

I now use this knot exclusively. It's secure, very compact, and much easier to remember than the double half hitch and the starting knot. :)

Thanks,

Eric, the end of the last loop goes through the first loop around(under) the anchor string. Other names for this knot are the "pretzel knot" or "x-double half hitch."

Look at the "rear" view of this knot on the GSS site. It's a little blury but you can clearly see how Parnell ties the knot, beginning with the first loop of a standard double half-hitch. He then shows you where he's going around the anchor string again and he actually puts the tail through the small loop (the very first loop he created (he puts the tail through once once and then backs it out and does it again so you can see where he's going with it) and then he cinches up the knot with his hand.

You can always tell if the knot is tied properly -- just give it a look and you should always see the "X" shape of the finished knot. If it's not there you've tied it incorrectly.

The X shape is clearly shown in the images of two knots I've posted at my site. I guess I did it right. :)

Thanks Joe, moosryan, and Jonnyshoes. Just trying to give back and hopefully help others from what I've learned from the collective wisdom here.

Eagle's diagram of the Parnell knot is correct! It is different than the half-hitch with a tail. IMO it is a better knot because it wraps around the anchor string a second time. It also creates the distinctive x where the strings cross.

Hi moosryan,

You'd be surprised how easy it is to do the pro-knot. At least I think it's easier than the double half hitch. :)
