View Full Version : Reducing Tension Away from Center

A few months ago, I was taught to string by a friend. That friend was taught to string by a master stringer with about 40 years of experience.

The method that I was taught was to decrease tension on the strings as I moved away from center. For example, if the center 8 mains are strung at 60 lbs, the next couple of mains would be at 59 lbs. By the outermost main, the tension would be decreased to 55 lbs or so. The theory behind this method is to reduce the variability of power that is felt across the stringbed. After all, the strings get shorter as you move away from center and therefore lose power. By using lower tension on the shorter strings, you get a little more power when you hit off-center.

From the reading of other posts on this board, I get the impression that some believe that the string tension will eventually even out after several hours of playing, so the method that I was taught seems rather foolish.

Anyway, I'm curious to know if anyone else has tried this method and if so, did it appear to work and did the tension difference stay in the strings after prolonged use?

All the best!

Hi,

this method is called "proportional stringing" and was discussed in this thread already:
