Does anyone know the special combination of strings that Roger Federer uses?

I know he uses natural gut for the mains and a special poly for the crosses. I have a "friend" who knows the exact string Roger uses for his crosses, but he won't tell me for childish reasons. I know it is a polyester string that you can only get in Europe and Canada. Maybe someone on this forum knows... Thanks for the help!

The cross string he uses is Luxilon Big Banger ALU power rough.

Odd. I was under the impression he used BB in the mains, and gut in the crosses. Where are you getting your information?

Well tell that to Rog as he seems to make use of it pretty well as do many others. But, he only uses them for a few games so his needs are much different from a club player.

I would ask, where are you getting your information from

Checkout www.grandslamstringers.com (http://www.grandslamstringers.com) and you can find his set up directly from people that have actually strung his racquet (eg. Ron Yu, Richard Parnell).

It's Bab VS nat gut in the mains and Lux BB Alu power rough in the crosses. He varies the tension a little depending on the surface/conditions but generally the crosses are 1lb or 2lbs less than the mains.

cheers,

Kwick

Yeah the mains influence the feel of the racquet more than the crosses. Club players don't put gut as manis because it breaks too fast. I don't think roger really cares about how long his strings last. And no he doesn't use the N six-one 90.

http://www.acestringing.netfirms.com/pros.htm it is an overview of the top 10 pros and the things they use. It is still under construction though.

I wonder why the USRSA tournament logs (going all the way back to 2003) are all showing Federer using the opposite setup? They show Hewitt using gut/poly so it's not like they can't make the distinction.

First, everything I've read says Federer uses Wilson Natrual Gut, not Babolat (if you want to say Wilson buys their gut from Babolat, point taken). Racquettech.com lists his string as BB Alu Power Rough 16L/Wilson Natural Gut, which to me says he uses Luxilon as mains and gut as crosses, but I read a stringer artical in the most recent Deuce Magazine that states he uses gut in the mains and Luxilon as the crosses. I've read that in other areas as well.
So which is it?

Does it really matter

If it's for yourself, try both and chose the one you like. If it's for a customer, chose one and refer them to whichever information source you want :p

I will chose to go by the GSS forum source myself. There's no ambiguity in their information and they'll answer a direct question if you want :)

cheers,

kwick.

Look at any picture of his racquet and you can clearly see the alu power in the crosses.

Go to this link that was written in USA Today. It should answer some of your questions. And if you read the latest Duece magazine the one with Leyton Hewitt on the cover it has a really nice article about the exact strings the pros use, both men and women and the tensions they string their racquets.

Federer uses gut mains because he likes to get more feel when he plays and he uses a Luxilon cross so he can rip the ball more and still have control. He drops the tension on his crosses by a few pounds because the Luxilon strings won't stretch as much as gut so by dropping the tension a few pounds if would feel as if the racquet has been strung at an equal tension all the way around.

I'm almost certain he uses a racquet custom made for exactly what he wants. So you'll never be able to buy the racquet he actually uses. The nCode Tour 90 is probably the closest you'll get, though.

so basically his racket is like the tour 90 but its a modified version of it?

Yes, it is basically that racquet, but the head may not even be 90 sq. inches. They just paint his racquet like that because it is the closest racquet to his that they sell mainstream. If you're really interested, you could call Wilson and ask them, they may or may not give you an answer.
