Default problem stringing Wilson Hyp Hammer 3.6 w/ Rollers

Hi

Have been stringing for about 6 years on various machines and recently went to string a Wilson Hyper Hammer 3.6 w/ Rollers racquet. I'm stringing on a Ektelon Model H about 15 years old which has no brake on it (not sure why). Anyways, had problems when I was doing the crosses and came to the first "roller" and when I went to pull that cross had very little luck because the string moved (since racquet turned due to no brake) so that instead of resting against the roller it was on the opposite side of the opening (left side) and the cross was now diagonal instead of straight across. Any way to string this racquet on a machine with no brake? Thanks

Hi,

With the Wilson Rollers Racquets, you have to start the mains on the correct side. One side is clearly marked "S" for short. If you look, you will notice that, starting from the head, the first roller on one side is not level with the first roller on the other, so that if you start off wrongly with the mains, you will start your crosses from the wrong side.

Gee, I don't even bother with my brake. I just brace the frame against me so it doesn't move and generally that will do the trick. If you need to pull it a bit crooked, the world won't end--jsut straighten it after you draw tension on the next cross.

I guarantee your customers won't know any difference as long as they get their racket back with straight strings.

Using the brake is nothing to do with the straightness of the crosses. It is to prevent the angle at which you pull the crosses becoming too acute when you are close to the tip or the handle. The more acute the angle of pull outside of the racquet frame, the greater the loss through friction in the grometts. If you simply lean on the frame to stop it moving you are almost bound to lose some tension while you tightening the clamp.

If your machine has no break, there is nearly always a slot of some sort in the swivelling cradle, through you can drop the blade a large screwdriver or chisel and wedge it against the fixed part of the machine.
