Default Best strings for my mono?

Hi all,

My first post: I'm getting back into tennis after about 10 years. Back then I used a Prince Graphite Pro 110 or Pro Kennex Graphite Dominator. I just had them re-strung in synthetic gut and Head rip string respectively. They hit nice just like I remembered.

However, not one to leave well enough alone in the racquet dept. I picked up a Prince Extender Mach 1000 off ebay. I always liked the look of the mono frame but never had the $$$ to buy one when they were new and "in."

This racquet is currently strung with Prince Synthetic Gut 17 ga. The strings have been on for a decade I was told.

I want to replace them, but my local sporting goods guy doesn't have a real good recommendation about a string for this racquet.

Any string recommendations? Tension recommendations?

The customer service guy at Prince recommended Prince Premiere 16 ga. Strung at 60lbs.

Anyone still play with this racquet?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Well, since I can't wait to get this racquet strung and hit the court, I think that I going with the manufacturer's recommendation printed on the racquet: Prince original synthetic gut, 16ga.

I'll give that a whirl.

Prince Synthetic Gut 16 is a real allround string and a good thing to start with.
Depending on your experiences, we might then be able to give you more specific recommendations. The choice of string and tension strongly depends on how you play, and less on which racquet you play.

Thanks for the reply Jens,

I'm 47, out of shape and slow Right now my style of play as I try to get back into shape is banging the ball from the baseline. Every once in a while I'll rush the net. I'm pretty fair at picking up hard serves and like to try to return them DEEP!

Most of my playing time is just hitting back and forth to practice and get a good aerobic workout.

As a player with one of these in my past, I would use any string that you would like in either of your other frames. I used 17 g PSGD & Gamma Rough off and on.
String early & often.

Default New string on!

Well, the instructor over at our local Y strung up my Mach 1000 over the weekend with Wilson Stamina 16, their traditional synthetic gut. He seems to like this string. I picked up my racquet on Tuesday at lunch but couldn't try it out -- rain.

Rain again today, and probably tomorrow

Maybe, I'll get to try out the new string on Friday!
